4 Ways to Get a Head Start on #GivingTuesday

WRITTEN BY LINDSEY HIMPHILL

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that has millions of participants every year. Largely powered by social media, #GivingTuesday’s influence has grown year over year and continues to be a great way for organizations to connect with current and new donors.

Always the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, this year #GivingTuesday will be December 3rd. As December quickly approaches, it’s important to prepare your campaign early to get a headstart for one of the biggest fundraising days of the year.

1. Craft Your Story

Because #GivingTuesday is one of the biggest giving days of the year and helps to kick of the giving season, it’s important for your organization to stand out from the competition. One way that you can do this is with storytelling.

In the months preceding #GivingTuesday, begin thinking about developing a compelling narrative to share with your audience. By telling a story that your audience can emotionally connect with, they will be more engaged and more likely to participate. Also consider how you can begin demonstrating your organization’s impact to your audience so they know exactly how their gift on #GivingTuesday will make a difference.

2. Secure Matching Gifts

Matching gifts are a great way to help motivate your donors to participate with your #GivingTuesday campaign. For example, you can promote to your audience that matching gifts will be applied only on #GivingTuesday, creating a sense of urgency for them to participate. It will also help motivate them as their impact becomes multiplied because of the match.

Use the time you have now to reach out to any larger donors, sponsors, or local businesses who may be interested in supporting your campaign with a matching gift.

3. Recruiting Ambassadors

Because #GivingTuesday is such a large social movement, recruiting ambassadors is a great way to see more success with your campaign. Ambassadors would be individuals who would support your organization by sharing out your fundraising pages on #GivingTuesday. Ideally, these ambassadors will also have a large social network and/or social following.

Use the time you have now to begin identifying your potential ambassadors and reaching out to them. Keep anyone who agrees to become an ambassador involved with your plans for the campaign’s strategy and with specific instructions on how they can participate.

4. Set Up Your Fundraising Tools

Once you have the story for your campaign established and have secured any matching gifts or ambassadors, the next step is to get your fundraising tools set up! While you set up your fundraising tools, be sure to create a specific fundraising page for your #GivingTuesday campaign. Leverage #GivingTuesday’s logos to co-brand your pages with their official logos.

Since #GivingTuesday is largely a social media movement and a majority of individuals access their social media through their mobile devices, it’s extremely important to make sure all your donation forms are mobile friendly. Better yet, having a text-to-donate keyword to share is another way to promote your organization’s campaign. A multi-channel approach for your #GivingTuesday communications will help get your campaign to everyone in your audience.

The #GivingTuesday movement has successfully created a global day of giving that your organization can leverage to reach donors. By crafting a compelling story, recruiting ambassadors, and sharing your fundraising pages with effective strategy, your organization can have the opportunity to reach out to existing and potentially new donors.
