Successful crowdfunding for nonprofits was one of the biggest fundraising trends in 2014. With the huge successes many nonprofits saw last year, crowdfunding campaigns will continue to be an important part of fundraising strategies in 2015. This tactic is taking off because individuals can create their own fundraising campaign, from the convenience of any device, to support local organizations or causes they care about.

Swedish Gamer Raises Funds for Save the Children

Internet stardom can be used for good. Swedish gamer Felix Kjellberg reached 25 million subscribers on his YouTube channel and turned his considerable audience into a fundraising opportunity, The Guardian reported. He created a crowdfunding campaign for Save the Children, an international organization that works to provide better childhood care for kids around the world, including health care, education, disaster response and fighting hunger. Kjellberg offered perks for givers in different contribution levels, such as group chats where viewers could ask him questions, play video games with him or the opportunity to spend a day with him. The campaign had a goal of $250,000 and reached $342,828.

The Potato Salad Campaign

When Zack Brown of Ohio created a crowdfunding campaign asking for $10 to make potato salad, it quickly went viral and attracted $55,000 in donations from more than 5,000 backers. Brown used a portion of the money to throw a party for participants and dedicated the rest of the funds to fighting hunger in Columbus, Ohio. He planned to add more to this fund with the proceeds from PotatoStock. The potato salad project was on of the most viewed crowdfunding campaigns of all time, according to Crowdfund Insider. Even though the campaign started out as a joke, it goes to show how individuals can make a significant difference with crowdfunding technologies.

Ebola Emergency Campaign

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the worst epidemic of the disease since it was first discovered. It is an unprecedented medical emergency, and many groups have banded together to try to fight the outbreak. A number of organizations have started crowdfunding campaigns to raise money for Ebola aid and research, but the most successful was the Scripps Research Institute’s Dr. Erica Saphire, who started a successful crowdfunding campaign with a $100,000 goal for research to produce more of the Zmapp vaccine, Funded Science stated. She was able to raise $101,964.

There have been other campaigns for pharmaceutical research for Ebola, as well as aid for the victims in West Africa. Scientific fundraisers can often be challenging because researchers fail to communicate the need and the impact the project will have. Saphire’s successful crowdfunding campaign may have taken off because of the increased awareness around the need for Ebola treatment.

In addition, UNICEF has been fundraising for children in need by offering to match donations, CNBC reported. The organization has raised $12.7 million and exceeded its $3.6 million matching fund for a successful crowdfunding campaign.
