In this day and age, fundraising campaigns that go viral would be nearly impossible without mobile donations. Viral fundraising campaigns come in many shapes and sizes, but all share these three strengths:
- People can give conveniently from their smartphone.
- Supporters can easily share and promote links across text and social.
- Supporters are thanked and engaged in a dynamic way.
Messaging, which has 99% open rates, with links to brief personal videos, is the best way to do #3!
Game of Thrones Author Creates Viral Fundraising Campaign with Big Results
A recent example of a Prizeo fundraising campaign that caught fire through social media was George R.R. Martin’s offer to write two lucky bidders into his next “Song of Ice and Fire” novel and brutally kill them off for a price tag of $20,000. The “Game of Thrones” author initiated the campaign to raise money for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot in New Mexico. It launched on June 5 and had a preliminary goal of $200,000 by August 4 to be split evenly between the wolf sanctuary and food bank. However, the response was so overwhelming that the goal was surpassed in one day. Fans have raised more than $350,000, and the campaign target has been readjusted to $500,000.
Two of the top spots were offered for a man and a woman, and each will get to choose their station in life in the fantasy world. Both of the fictional murders have already been claimed, but there are different gifts for varying donation tiers. Other prizes include signed maps of Westeros, scripts from the HBO show and Martin’s hat. Donors who give any amount are registered for a chance to tour the wolf sanctuary by helicopter and have dinner with Martin. Martin has always been passionate about wolves, which factor into his novels. The sanctuary not only cares for wolves, but also several foxes, wolf dogs and other rare canines, Take Part said. Nearly all the animals at the shelter are rescued exotic pets. Martin and his wife have been donating to the sanctuary for years, but the facility is expensive to operate so he got his fans involved to significantly improve the wolves’ habitats, as well as feed hungry people in the Santa Fe area. Thanks in part to the popularity of Game of Thrones, the fundraising campaign could attract more attention to both causes.
Every Cause Should Dream Up Creative Incentives to Capture Maximum Donations and Gain New Donors
While your organizations goals may not be as lofty as $500,000 within two months, creative fundraising ideas can help organizations of any size meet and exceed their targets, especially when combined with the strength of mobile. Smartphones make it convenient to contribute to a cause in a matter of seconds, and it’s easy to capture donations when people are motivated by information a friend shares or something they read online.
Mobile Fundraising Makes Viral Campaigns Possible for Every Type of Cause
It may be unlikely that your campaign goes viral to the same degree as Martin’s, but mobile fundraising makes it simple for contributors to share campaign information with their friends and family members through text, email or social media, significantly expanding your reach.
Mobile giving opens the door for many new possibilities to increase the effectiveness of your campaigns, especially as individuals continue to rely on their smartphones. No matter what your cause, you can engage with more people and when people give you can keep them engaged with dynamic mobile communications!
